the town of rethymno is an ideal place to stay for someone who wants to visit the island of crete. a lovely town, with a wonderful 11km long sandy beach, a very picturesque old town with venetian and turkish monuments, narrow streets with houses with stone arches, a picturesque venetian port and an impressive venetian castle. rethymno offers many things to do and see and has an interesting nightlife. rethymnon's location in about the center of crete, makes it easy to visit every interesting sight of the island, by public bus, organised tour, or car.


how to arrive:


it seems a long description, but there are different arrival points at crete and various means of transport to use to get to rethymno. with following your way of arriving below, things get simple.


by air:
if you arrive by plane, you will probably arrive at one of the airports of iraklion or hania.


iraklio international airport nikos kazantzakis is the biggest airport in crete, located 84 km east of rethymno and 5 km east of the center of iraklio. public bus nr. 1 opposite the exit of the airport's building, leaves every 15-20 min, to the center of iraklio. there is a bus stop 250m away from iraklio bus station. one ticket costs 0,90 euro and can be bought from the kiosk outside the bus, or from the driver. the ride to the bus station is about 10-15 minutes. a taxi to the bus station should cost about 7 euro and would be a 10 minute ride. to rethymno directly, about 90 euro and an one hour ride. many car rental companies have offices in the airport. leaving the airport by car, the road on the right, that is towards west, leads to iraklion while the road straight ahead, that is towards south, by following the signs, leads to rethymno.

hania international airport ioannis daskalogiannis, at akrotiri peninsula, is 72 km north west of rethymno and 14 km northeast of the center of hania. there are only five buses the day from the airport to hania town and bus station, at 06:45, 10:20, 11:50, 18:30, 21:20. the ride to hania bus station is about 20 minutes. (tel. for bus schedules information: 2821093052 or 2821093306). a taxi to the bus station should cost 20 euro and it would take 20 minutes to get to hania. to rethymno directly, about 80 euro and an one hour ride. many car rental companies have offices in the airport. leaving the airport by car, the signs show the direction to rethymno.

by boat:

rethymno port is located in the center of rethymno, 300m away, or 8 minutes walk from our rooms.

iraklio port is opposite the iraklion bus station, 8 min walk, by turning right from the port's exit. on most boat arrivals, there are free buses leading to the bus station. from iraklion bus station to rehymno by bus, the trip lasts for 90 minutes and costs 6,90 euro. a taxi to rethymno should cost about 80 euro and it is an one hour ride. leaving the port by car, turning right, that is towards west and driving along the sea for about 4 km the road brings to traffic lights. from there, continuing straight ahead, towards the south and following the signs, you get to the highway to rethymno, where you will arrive after one hour drive.

hania port is located at souda bay, 9 km east of hania and 54 km west of rethymno. the port connects athens with hania and for the boats arriving, there are buses waiting, just opposite where the boats dock, to transfer passengers to rethymno bus station. the ticket costs 6 euro and can be bought inside the bus. the journey to rethymno takes 55 minutes. a taxi can be found 50m away from the boat. the ride to rethymno costs about 60 euro, taking about 50 minutes to arrive. by car, from the exit of the port turn left and at the next junction left again, to the highway which leads to rethymno.

by bus:

rethymno bus station: it is a 10 minutes walk to our rooms. turn right towards the fortress and on the first corner turn right again. walking for about 7 minutes along i. dimakopoulou st., you will meet porta guora. turn left and on the next corner turn right at tompazi street. you will reach the cathedral, keep going straight along the cathedral and on the corner turn left. you get to arkadiou st. and we are opposite, at nr. 159. a taxi from the bus station to our rooms would cost about 4 euro.

iraklio bus station: buses to rethymno run every hour. the ticket costs 6,90 euro and it takes 90 minutes to arrive to rethymno by bus. there are two bus companies in crete, both using the same bus stations, having the same timetables for schedules to rethymno and the same prices: ktel iraklio-lasithi (east crete) bus company and ktel hania-rethymno (west crete) bus company.

hania bus station: buses to rethymno run every hour. the ticket costs 6 euro and the journey to rethymno takes 60 minutes. the two bus companies, ktel iraklio-lasithi (east crete) and ktel hania-rethymno (west crete), both use the same bus stations, have the same timetables for schedules to rethymno and the same prices.

by car:

arriving to rethymno from iraklio, it would be more convenient to take the road by the sea, which leads directly to our rooms. we have two entrances and the one by the sea is at 45, eleftheriou venizelou st. the street named eleftheriou venizelou, is the last part of the road by the sea, in between the two piers of the harbour and just before the venetian port. as you are coming by the sea, you will understand that you are at el. venizelou st. by seeing palm trees along the road, by both sides, right and left. we are in the middle of this street.

arriving to rethymno from hania, you will continue driving straight, until the second traffic lights you will meet. there, where is the last corner of the municipal garden, you will turn right, to dimitrakaki st. on the next corner, you turn left and follow the road, along moatsou, zymvrakaki and loukareos streets, until you see at your left aroad going down: turn left taking this road, cross the road that you will meet, when it is free, drive straight ahead and you will meet the sea. turn left and you are on sofokli venizelou st., which continues to el. venizelou st. we are at nr. 45 of el. venizelou st.

from may until october, el. venizelou street becomes pedestrian from 07.30pm until 01.00am and cannot be accessed by car. so, if your arrival is during this period, you will have to park the car just before it and reach the hotel on foot.
